Finance Comptroller-Deputy Director II
The City of Charlotte’s Finance Department is seeking a highly experienced Finance Comptroller. This role will report to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) .
Salary: $152,380.65 – $190,475.82 Commensurate with Experience
The ideal candidate is one who has managerial experience in overseeing complex financial operations across various functions within the finance department. The Finance Comptroller will serve as one of two deputy directors, directly supervising managers responsible for the daily operations of the Finance Department.
This role will oversee managers handling key functions such as financial reporting, general ledger accounting and reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, as well as employee travel and expense reimbursements. Additional responsibilities include overseeing debt management, cash management and investments, revenue collections and billing, financial internal control reviews and monitoring, and insurance and risk management services.
The Comptroller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and plays a pivotal role in maintaining the department’s financial integrity and operational efficiency.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Level Degree and seven (7) years of related work experience in progressive managerial experience in financial administration and management, or
- Master’s Degree and five (5) years of related work experience in progressive managerial experience in financial administration and management, or
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
- Local government experience is highly preferred but not required
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or
- Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO), or
- North Carolina Certified Local Government Finance Officer (NC-CLGFO)

- Provides leadership and management to assist the CFO in the planning, organizing, and directing of the activities of the Finance department.
- Provides strategic leadership which improves effectiveness, efficiency, customer service and seek opportunities to reduce risk, increase compliance, utilize technology, and ensure financial integrity.
- Advises and provides support to the CFO and senior management throughout the city providing guidance and expertise for financial services activities.
- Participates in planning and development of fiscal goals, objectives, and metrics.
- Oversee special projects and other related duties as appropriate or assigned by management.
- Serves as a member of the Finance Leadership Team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work requires the direction of division managers within the department, as well as other professional finance staff.
- Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments.
- Work may require the direction of assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
